The KYA
After-School Program operates each school year from
the middle of August until the end of May. The program runs five days a
week for 180 days, Monday through Friday, from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. The Central
Consolidated School Transportation Department buses the children to the KYA facility
at 3:00 P.M., and the parents pick them up by 6:00 P.M. The After-School
Program consist of a healthy nutritious snack furnished by the Central Consolidated
School District Nutrition Department, homework tutorials, reading tutorials,
arts and crafts, and recreational activities. The After-School Program
is currently serving some 140 children.

KYA
participates in the San Juan County “First Tee” Golf
Program sponsored by San Juan College. The “First Tee” Program runs
both a fall and
spring session. The students are transported to the Riverview Golf Course
for fundamental instruction in golf. During the fall and spring of 2006,
60 students
participated in the program.

During
the months of November, December, January,
and February, KYA sponsors a winter basketball league for girls and boys in
grades 4 through 8. The program uses volunteers to administer
and operate the program
with over 60 volunteers participating last year. This program is one
of the most successful
programs sponsored by the KYA. During the 2006-07 school year some 200
girls and boys participated in the program.

Program Rules
Each
spring in April and May, KYA sponsors a co-ed volleyball
program. The program is set up on a recreational basis that features
volleyball fundamentals and co-ed play. Each spring the program serves
over 60 girls and boys in grades 4 through 8.

The
Kirtland Youth Association Summer Literacy
and Recreation Program operates five days a week from early June until
the middle of August. During this three month period, KYA offers a variety
of youth activities Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. Summer
activities include breakfast and lunch served by the Central Consolidated School
District Nutrition Department, literacy activities in reading, math, social
studies,
and language arts, computer literacy, arts and crafts, swimming, indoor recreation,
and outdoor activities. During the summer of 2006, 129 youth
were enrolled
in the program.

During
the summer of 2006, KYA initiated
a Summer Pee Wee Basketball Program for the younger children in the community. The
program for both boys and girls, operates two evenings a week, and stresses
the fundamentals of basketball in a recreational setting. Co-ed games
are organized among the 65 children enrolled in the program. The program
is administered
and operated by some 20 volunteers from the community.
